Viking Age (800-1050 AD).
Bird figures are repeated symbols in the viking art, often associated with the Nordic god Odin. On one fine helmet plate a raven is shown flying with an eagle beside a mounted warrior, who may represent Odin himself.
This god was said to possess two ravens, whom he sent far and wide to bring him tidings, and who´s names, Huginn and Muninn, in old Danish appear to mean "thought" and "memory".
