Viking age (800-1050 AD).
Brooch in the Urnæs style, named after the wood carvings on the church of Urnæs, Norway. Found at Lindholm Høje, Ålborg. The motive is a fantasy animal fighting a snake. This is often interpreted as Christianity in battle against Paganism - the latter of course represented by the serpent.
