Viking age (800-1050 AD).
It was the Viking ship that made the Viking age possible. It is the Viking Longship with its single mast and square sail which has become the most familiar of vessels in the history of marine architecture. But not all Viking ships were warships; in fact the bulk of Viking shipping took the form of cargo-boats, for trade, colonization and deep-sea exploration. Chief amongst them was the Knörr, a bulky, buxom-breasted tramp-ship that was the real maid-of-all-work of the northern seas.
